“a single soul can have many windows, here are two—” “. . . he is a double-minded man, unstable in all he does.” James 1:8 When there is division in our thoughts, it is not long before there is division in our acts, and thereafter the division is registered in us— inevitably. A famous psychologist said: “We must be held together by a single-minded devotion, otherwise we begin to fall to pieces.” This is how it was with Jesus— and this is how it must be with us. We must decide to be one person, with one overarching motive, moving towards the goal. Within my earthly temple there’s a crowd,
There’s one who loves his neighbor as himself,
Someone has plotted the steps which lead from inner division to calamity in this way: (1) outwardly correct but inwardly divided; (2) the inner division shows itself in outer disloyalty; (3) this leads to downfall. Each of us must be one man or woman, not two; and that one man or one woman must be God’s man or God’s woman. Make up your mind as to what you really want— and then give yourself to that with all your heart. O Father, take all my conflicting motives and bring them under one control— Your control. And whatever path You have for me to follow, help me not to love things more than people. For Jesus’ sake.
