'Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters;
and you who have no money, come, buy and eat!'  Isaiah 55:1

It has always been God's intention that His people should find satisfaction for their souls by drinking the water which He provides.  This fallen world, in one sense, is like a desert, and walking through it our souls quickly become parched.

So what do we do?

Do we humbly draw near to God and drink in glad and utter dependence
from His life-giving stream?
No, for being dependent on another to make our lives work is something our
carnal nature abhors.
We like to feel we are in control, so instead of drinking the water offered we take our shovels and begin to dig in the desert, hoping that the cisterns we excavate will somehow get filled with water that will satisfy us.

We know that everyone is thirsty for God, and we know, too,
that most will not admit it.  Thus the thirst is masked---
masked, but always there.

Eugene Peterson says, 'Everyone is on the verge of crying out
"My Lord and my God" but the cry is drowned out by doubts or defiance.'
Remember it was God who built that thirst for Himself into the human soul when He established the human creation.  So the fact that we are thirsty is not something of which He disapproves.  God is not against our thirst; what He is against is our sinful attempt to satisfy the ache in our soul in anything other than in Him.

The determination to find our own source of water for our thirsty souls, when expressed in words, might read something like this:
'I will do whatever it takes to provide myself with feelings that give me a sense of wellbeing.'  However, to try and satisfy the deep thirst of the soul outside of God is the height of foolishness.
