Inspiration: And say, “Return, O children of men.” For a thousand years in Your sight Are like yesterday when it passes by, Or as a watch in the night. You have swept them away like a flood, they fall asleep; In the morning they are like grass which sprouts anew. In the morning it flourishes and sprouts anew; Toward the evening it fades and withers away. Psalm 90:3-6 The Chinese have a saying that goes like this: “In a broken nest there are no whole eggs.” Because the “nest” of life has been broken by Adam’s sin, our central life and unity has gone. There is just no way that we can handle ourselves confidently with poise and power in this vast universe without a sense of being linked to the kingdom of God. Over one of the doors in a theological seminary I visited, these words are inscribed for all to see: “Harmony of sound is music; harmony of color is art; harmony of life is the kingdom of God.” In all God’s communication with the human race since the Fall, the dominant theme is the need to again enter into correspondence with the environment for which it was made— the kingdom of God. Outside it we are like cut flowers— living, but without roots. O Father, day by day the truth is dawning on my spirit that only as I live my life in accordance with the laws of Your kingdom can I find the harmony for which my whole being craves. I am so thankful I have found it. Amen. Technique: “In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread till you return to
the ground.
Physical death is both a judgment and a blessing. It renders all activity vain, but delivers the redeemed from earthly frustration and opens the way to an eternal salvation that outlasts the grave. Ordinarily when God came to visit with Adam and Eve, it was the highlight of the entire day, but on this occasion, after their glorious covering had faded, they were afraid and attempted to hide. “And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in
the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence
of the Lord God among the trees of the garden”
The word to hide is composed of three elements:
in this instance means is, so that literally this character is saying the body is a tree, or Adam and his wife are trees. As they hid among the trees, they were not seen, only the trees.
“But the Lord God called to the man, and said to him, ‘Where are
you?’ And he said, ‘I heard the sound of Thee in the garden, and
I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself’”
At this point, they came forth from among the trees. The word to come shows this exactly. The tree radical has been stretched out a bit to accommodate two persons. At the base of the tree is also a hook, or foot, which gives the word action, to come (from behind a tree).
