From where do frankincense
and myrrh originate?

Frankincense is an aromatic resin obtained by tapping the trunks of trees belonging to the genus Boswellia.  The milky resin hardens when exposed to the air and forms irregular lumps---the form in which it is usually marketed.  Myrrh comes from a tree of the genus Commiphora, a native of Arabia and Northeast Africa.  It too is a resin obtained from the tree trunk.

Why do tree leaves turn color in the fall?  The carotenoids (pigments in the photosynthesizing cells), which are responsible for the fall colors, are present in the leaves during the growing season.  However, the colors are eclipsed by the green chlorophyll.  Toward the end of summer, when the chlorophyll production ceases, the other colors of the carotenoids (such as yellow, orange, red, or purple) become visible.  Listed below are the autumn leaf colors of some common trees.

What are living stones?
Various succulent plants from the stony deserts of South Africa that mimic their surroundings are given this name.  Each shoot or plant is made up of two grossly swollen leaves virtually fused together and colored to resemble a pebble.  Large daisy-like flowers are borne from between the leaf pair.

When does the green flash phenomenon occur?  On rare occasions, the sun may look bright green for a moment, as the last tip of the sun is setting.  This green flash occurs because the red rays of light are hidden below the horizon and the blue are scattered in the atmosphere.  The green rays are seldom seen because of dust and pollution in the lower atmosphere.  It may best be seen when the air is cloudless and when a distant, well-defined horizon exists, as on an ocean.

Why are fall leaves bright red in some years and dull in others?  Two factors are necessary in the production of red autumn leaves.  There must be warm, bright, sunny days during which the leaves manufacture sugar.  Warm days must be followed by cool nights with temperatures below 45◦F.  This weather combination traps the sugar and other materials in the leaves.  This results in the manufacture of red anthocyanin.
