Everett Lewis Jenkins, 77
'Mr. Ev'
Everett Lewis "Ev" Jenkins, 77, was called home to Glory on
Wednesday evening, September 3, 2008, after a long battle with
Parkinson's Disease. He was a resident of Coeur d'Alene,
Idaho, since January 2000; being born in Lincoln, Nebraska, December
20, 1930, to Muir and Alma Jenkins (Griffith).
Ev grew up in Lincoln and completed three and a half years of his
architectural degree at the University of Nebraska, when his
yearning to fly off carriers at night caused him to join the Naval
Cadet Program during the Korean War. Upon graduation as a LTJG,
he served in the North China Sea, Philippines and then San Diego,
California.
His first marriage ended in divorce in 1975. He had four
children from that union: Ken Jenkins of New Zealand, Linda
Blessing (Jenkins) of Oceanside, California, Sandi Packer (Jenkins)
of Palm Desert, California, and Jeff Jenkins of Vista, California.
March 2, 1985, he married the love of his live, Sharon (Shary)
Hartley (Minor) in Encinitas, California, who survives him.
Ev spent most of his life as an entrepreneur, having various
companies that all dealt with the creativity of design: La
Jolla Arts; designed the Greek Orthodox Church of Encinitas;
designer of horse art to outline the equestrian events in Del Mar,
California, for the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics; the interior
re-design of Seacoast Community Church of Encinitas; and many
custom-designed homes throughout the San Diego County area. |
He also had a big heart for serving his community: he participated
in the Rotary Club of Del Mar (building an orphanage in Mexico);
acted as president of the Boys and Girls Club of Solana Beach,
California (spearheading the funding of their new building and
pool); was a charter member of the San Diego Aerospace Museum; was
an original member of Hospice of North County (San Diego); and
created an adventure club room for the middle school-age children at
his church, Seacoast Community Church, where he served as a Deacon.
This room of 3-D walls with gorillas and monkeys hiding behind
bushes and trees, and beaches and water with porpoise and whales,
attracted much attention from youth pastors throughout California.
Truly, Ev's real passions were Jesus Christ, his church, children of
all ages, airplanes and the arts. He was a self-taught oil
painter, majoring in Christian themes and receiving numerous awards.
He taught art to home-schooled children ages kindergarten to eighth
grade in his home church each week of the school year, both in
Encinitas and Coeur d'Alene, for 20-years. Those children were
a source of major joy for him.
Since coming to Coeur d'Alene, he designed various 3-D walls to
decorate the walls of Coeur d'Alene Bible Church for Christmas---one
year depicting a Dickens Christmas and another year depicting the
Bible from creation to the birth of Jesus. Since starting to
worship at Candelight Christian Fellowship in October 2006, the
church moved into the old Showboat Theatres, thus giving Ev one more
opportunity to design the welcome area for the children's ministry
with 3-D walls of trees and animals and birds with a swing and
fence. This was his final major project, finished this past
May. |

He is survived by his wife of 23 and 1/2 years, Shary; stepsons Mark
Hartley and his wife Kim of Carlsbad, California, Brian Hartley and
his wife Shannon (expecting their first child in January 2009) of
Cardiff-by-the-Sea, California, Bruce Hartley and his wife Kelley of
Modesto, California; sisters Janet Anderson (Jenkins) and husband,
John of Farmington, Michigan, Mildred (Micki) O'Connell (Jenkins) of
Scottsdale, Arizona; grandchildren: Robert, Brooke and Molly
Hartley of Carlsbad; Camille and Brett Hartley of Modesto; and many,
many loved nephews and nieces.

A memorial celebration will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, September
9, 2008, at Candlelight Christian Fellowship, 5725 N. Pioneer Drive,
Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, with military graveside service immediately
following at Riverview Cemetery on Lincoln Avenue, in Coeur d'Alene.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the building
fund of Candlelight Christian Fellowship or the American Parkinson's
Disease Association Inc., 135 Parkinson Avenue, Staten Island, NY
10305.
Yates Funeral Home, Coeur d'Alene Chapel, is entrusted with the care
of final arrangements. Please visit Ev's online memorial and
